AEFL Week Resource Roundup: Literacy Gap Map

For AEFL week, we’ve been sharing our top five resources! For our fourth resource, we’re sharing the Literacy Gap Map! 130 million Americans—54% of adults between the ages of 16-74—lack proficiency in literacy, essentially reading below the equivalent of a 6th grade level.  The Barbara Bush Foundation’s Literacy Gap Map is an interactive map which allows users to identify the intersection between language, health, economic status, and literacy.

Literacy doesn't just impact reading. Health, finances, and household income are all dependent on literacy. By teaching adults literacy skills necessary for better health outcomes, access to quality healthcare, and increased income, all Americans benefit from a better quality of life.
